If I were to rebuild the love matchmaking platform I once launched…

Years ago, I built a love matchmaking platform for Indonesia using Java, Spring Framework, Wicket, and MongoDB. Users could create profiles and match based on preferences and location.
At its peak, it reached customers in Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia, and hit around $2000 MRR.
But here’s the hard truth:
❌ The codebase became hard to maintain
❌ I was juggling my PhD and client projects
❌ I lacked business focus and product strategy
❌ Competition from Tinder and Bumble was intense
Eventually, I had to shut it down. It taught me more than any course or book ever could.
💡 If I were to build it again today:
- Frontend: Next.js (web), React Native (mobile)
- Backend: NestJS with type safety and modularity
- Infra & Auth: Supabase to move fast without reinventing the wheel
- Business: Focus on actual user needs and a realistic go-to-market plan
It wouldn’t just be a tech rebuild. I’d approach the business with more clarity, sharper positioning, and leaner validation.
Ever launched something that didn’t work out, but taught you everything?
